Marinas and Cruise Ships in La Paz, Mexico
In the last 20 years, the Sea of Cortez has become an ideal site for cruise ship excursions. The experience provides opportunities to practice kayaking and scuba diving in remote areas, watch gray whales and visit several islands in comfort and luxury.
Several small companies offer 7-day scientific tourist cruises visiting the area from the Bay of La Paz and the islands of Cerralvo and Espiritu Santo to San Jose Island the Marine Park of Loreto with its five islands (Carmen, Coronado, Danzante, Montserrat and Catalana). These excursions begin in La Paz, departing from the main tourist dock located on the boardwalk of the city (the Malecon).
Major cruise ships, such as Carnival, arrive via the Port of Pichilingue and then travel by bus 25 minutes to the central area of La Paz to spend the day. Some of the ports-of-call on major cruise ships include Santa Rosalia, located north of La Paz, and then on to the port of Puerto Vallarta, located on the southern Pacific coast of Mexico. These cruise ships travel from San Diego and some make connections with other cruise ships from Vancouver, Canada. Because La Paz receives more than twenty thousand visitors per year through this market, it has become an important leisure travel destination.
La Paz also offers services to smaller vessels for visitors with private boats and yachts. There are several choices of first-class marina services. You will find them at both extremes of the Malecon (boardwalk). You can also navigate around the Sea of Cortez by accessing the different ports found along the coast of the state, offering comfort and good service.
