Nature lovers will find opportunities for hiking,
mountain biking and camping all around La Paz. Just
about all of the beaches in the area are excellent spots for
camping. Those near the city offer more service, but the less
accessible sites offer a chance to enjoy a more unspoiled landscape. Examples of
these more remote beaches are Punta Coyote and San Evaristo, located about 60
miles from El Comitan via a dirt road.
This same
road provides access to the other nearby beaches, less known to the public. You
can camp in the shade of magnificent rock formations found on
the southern port of the Sierra la Giganta.
The desert is also a great place to experience these activities.
However, due to high temperatures in the summer and the fall, we recommend
trying them in the winter or spring. Short bicycle rides or desert walks through
the mountain pathways and valleys can be enjoyed throughout the year.
Another possibility is to travel through the
Sierra de la Laguna. Just 19 miles south of Todos Santos, you will observe the
amazing Sierra found at the limits of the county of La Paz. This hard rock
mountain, with an altitude of 6710 feet, was declared a Biosphere Reserve in
1994, so you must advise the authorities before you ascend.
As you climb, the landscape changes drastically from desert in
the lower altitudes, to low forest in the mid zones, and conifers higher up
where the climate is very cold and precipitation and water holes are common.
Reaching the top of this steep climb can take more than 18 hours. There are
several areas along the journey where you can rest and camp.
You can also enter the Sierra from the east side through Santiago and
Miraflores.
